BTR, now part of the large UK engineer Invenysis, was a massive engineering conglomerate with a diverse set of companies in many different fields of engineering whose combined annual sales turnover was over £9 billion.
ADR was brought on board to support the small central Strategic Purchasing team, based at Leatherhead.
The main aim of the project was to utilise the organisation’s purchasing strength by ensuring collaboration across BTR’s group companies to achieve cost reductions on high value categories of expenditure.
ADR developed a process for mandating and implementing collaboration across the widely dispersed group companies for a series of high value categories for expenditure.
Central to ADR’s role, was the support given to the particular central strategic purchasing manager chosen to head up each category team. This support included:
- The provision of development workshops for category team members to enhance their conceptual understanding
- Market research and analysis in areas specified and agreed by the teams
- Action learning and coaching of team members prior to key meetings with suppliers
- Liaison with key senior managers to build support for the collaboration effort, or to remove roadblocks.
For those categories involved, significant cost reductions were achieved and fully developed plans for robust post contract supplier management were put in place.
