NHS hospitals overspending by £500m on basic supplies

There are many reasons why NHS Hospitals are buying a range of different products at different prices, says Rebecca Howard:

* A lack of awareness about National Contracts and NHS Supplies’ deals

* Clinicians’ reluctance to standardise on routine items that they grown accustomed to using

* Ineffective demand management policies.

However, in this time of major budget cuts it is surely time for the public to refuse to accept these excuses and demand that limited funds are spent on patient care rather than overspend on daily consumables.
