NG Bailey

Bringing the four elements together

Leading Construction Company, NG Bailey had procurement knowledge and skills across the organisation that varied greatly, plus the business had a mixed perception of the value effective procurement could add to the organisation. Procurement practices lagged behind other sectors with inconsistent application of tools, techniques and behaviours both internally and with the supply chain.

Their aims:

1. Broaden and deepen understanding across the business of procurement

2. Upskill the core procurement team

3. Secure executive level sponsorship and commitment

4. Raise motivation levels amongst core procurement and stakeholders

The ADR assignment included the following elements:

- Designing and building a capability matrix to assess skills levels

- Designing and tailoring a series of six two-day workshops

- Senior Management Executive Briefings

- Supportive development surgeries at each region following each workshop

- NVQ provision at L3 and L4 in Supply Chain Management

The results were significant change in behaviours and adoption of new techniques. Profiles raised at regional level such that some members were nominated for additional management training and identified as potential leaders of the future. A significant number, 16 to the 25, also registered for NVQ Level 4 in Supply Chain Management to attain MCIPS. A further 13 registering with ADR for Level 3.

One of Bailey’s regional directors said: “...the way we now manage our suppliers, has improved noticeably. This has made us more attractive to the best suppliers, without having to simply throw money at them.”

A Bailey engineer said: “It helped me to see procurement as a business process that we are all involved in rather than just a back-office function that placed orders.”

Head of Procurement  “We now act as a single company rather than a collection of independent units. Bailey continues to increase its market strength, due in part to the success of this programme.”

The programme has won a National Training Award
