Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is one of the world’s largest alumina processing plants based in Gladstone, Australia. They acquire bauxite for processing into alumina from business partners and alliances.
Due to the cyclical nature of commodities it is imperative that mineral processing operations maximise efficiencies and control costs as this hugely influences continued viability.
In 2005, after attending a trial workshop event, QAL selected ADR Australia to provide a series of procurement skills development workshops aligned to their strategic sourcing process for MRO and Services.
The aim of the project was to improve procurement skills, introduce new thinking, foster teamwork and add a range of tools and techniques to compliment and enable the strategic sourcing process to secure and enhance value for the business.
ADR were tasked to provide a range of customized in-house training and development workshops to develop common ways of working in procurement in the business following the QAL strategic sourcing process used for their MRO and Services procurement.
These training events included:
1. Tactical sourcing tools and techniques
2. Strategic sourcing analysis and techniques
3. Supplier relationship management
4. Stakeholder relations
Procurement staff and selected sourcing influencers were introduced to the process and supporting tools and techniques in a workshop environment to develop competence and build team working.
Refresher workshops are periodically held for current and new employees.
Procurement staff and sourcing influencers developed competence to apply a range of tools and techniques to the strategic sourcing process.
Common ways of working in procurement for MRO and services was adopted across the business.
A suite of templates, and a checklist to ensure the application of the relevant tool and techniques, was developed and is used by procurement for sourcing projects to ensure process compliance and governance.
Cross functional teamwork was improved through stakeholder buy-in and support for procurement improvement projects.
