ADR worked with the group purchasing team, responsible for £350m of expenditure. Following a competency development assessment and intensive training workshop, ADR worked with category teams to identify category savings and to engage the supply base rapidly. Significant savings were delivered in first 9 months. It was clear that further competence development would be required to enhance this number further, through identification of key learning needs in advanced purchasing skills.

In the January2005 preliminary results, Geest’s Chairman, Sir John Banham, said “These results are a good achievement in a difficult year in which there was an unprecedented level of competition between food retailers. In response, we accelerated our improvement programme and made savings of £24 million”
